B.VOC. MEDICAL LAB TECHNOLOGY: AN INTRODUCTION
What is medical laboratory technology, you may ask. Have you ever been to a medical laboratory? It is the place where tests are carried out on clinical specimens to obtain information about the health of patients to aid in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases.
A medical laboratory is managed by a trained pathologist. He/she is usually a Doctor who has specialized in the discipline of clinical pathology.
Medical laboratory technicians work under a pathologist at medical labs. These allied healthcare workers are commonly known as MLT (Medical Laboratory Technician) and MLA (Medical Laboratory Assistant).
Their main task is to assist the pathologist in examining clinical specimen and arriving at a conclusion. MLT professionals are capable of performing tasks such as –
- Collecting clinical specimens of patients
- Labeling clinical specimens
- Safely storing the specimens
- Examining the specimen by subjecting it to specific tests
- Writing down the findings
- Passing down his/her observations to the main pathologist
DURATION
The academic program is 3 years long. It has various exit options too (Diploma after 1st year, Advanced Diploma after 2 years and Bachelor’s Degree after 3 years).
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Minimum educational qualification required is – completed 12th (Arts, Commerce or Science) from a recognized board.
